Captive State is best described as having easy listening elements of a psychedila, folk and indie pop. The songs on the EP show several facets to Captive State’s music.
The London-based eight piece band revolve around Tom Bootle and Joseph Kennedy. The band has already received accolades from Brian Eno, which I also thought could possibly be an influence, when listening to China White Doll, one of the four tracks on their debut Elmore Grove EP which was released this month.
Mona is the most radio friendly commerical track with its sing-along sound, while Lost is a more uptempo, southern rock toe-tapping chorus with a pleasant blend of brass horns.
Weatherman has a more leftfield beat, and like all the tracks have a certain familiarity which I can’t quite put my finger on, giving the songs an instant accessibility.
China White Doll starts out with its acoustic guitar and vocal delivery with a more retro-folk vibe, but the introduction of horns, piano and uptempo beat give the song a more expansive feel. As with all the tracks, Elmore Grove EP sounds like the beginning of what could be a very promising and successful commercial career for Captive State.
Captive State have teamed up with Lemon Jelly’s Nick Franglen who has done a fine job in producing a very listenable debut EP. I’m thinking Captive State are going to be a big success!
All four tracks on Elmore Grove EP are currently playing on the Captive State MySpace page.
