Whether you spend your leisure time listening to music on the radio, television or the internet, you will not have escaped the endless advertisements for online betting sites, which must represent the biggest growth area on the net these days.

For anyone remotely interested in gaming or online betting there are a whole stack of ‘free’ offers to tempt you to join the various sites and such is the intensity of advertising that most of us will be familiar with the big names in betting whether we use their service or not.

But if you do fancy a flutter, it is worth remembering that you do not have to be a sports fan to do so, although that is the core business for many bookmakers, but there are other areas such as entertainment betting that may be the thing to get the juices flowing.

For as long as I can remember it has been possible to get odds for predicting the Christmas number one single for instance, although it has to be said that it is not as straight forward in the 21st century as it might have been when you simply had to choose between The Beatles or Rolling Stones!

It might be a surprise to learn that many bookies offer endless opportunities for music and entertainment fans to take their chances by placing bets on the outcome of certain events online.

Fans of television shows like American Idol, X Factor, I’m A Celebrity and so on have taken to being interactive like a duck to water. Every week there are millions of phone calls or text messages sent in order to register votes for our favourite act/person on the show, and we all have our own ideas about who we would like to see win these competitions.

However while we are happy tapping out text messages and making phone calls at premium rates because our votes count on talent shows, only a few will have been tempted into placing a bet on the eventual winners of these competitions.

As with sports betting, it is best to familiarise yourself with the up to date betting terminology before getting involved, that includes what the odds mean and what you can expect to win or lose by placing your own bets.

While the odds are normally pretty low there are often simple betting choices to be made such as, will the winner of American Idol for instance, be male or female.

Like betting in any form the favourites will pay out less than the outsiders, meaning that the odds of Wagner actually winning the recent UK X Factor would have been very high and winnings would also be very high, while backing the favourite and eventual winner Matt Cardle would hardly have been worth your time.

The beautiful singer/songwriter Rumer made her debut on the excellent TV series Later with Jools Holland on BBC 2 last night, performing the wonderful single Slow live with her impressive band.

The short version of the show only allowed time for the one performance from most of Jools Holland’s guests, the full programme will be aired on Friday when Rumer will perform another couple of tracks.

As a sucker for quality female vocals Rumer has already earned a place amongst my current favourite singer/songwriters of the female variety, on the basis of hearing just a few tracks.

It is early days in her career but she earns her a place amongst the likes of Corrine Bailey Rae, Shea Seger, Melody Gardot, Jo Hamilton and many others that have released music over the last twelve months.

It is notable that while these artists perform music in various genres none of these females rely on gimmickery or wearing French lingerie on stage as a diversion from their music, each of them are immensely talented vocalists who are also able to craft meaningful and melodic songs from scratch.

They are intelligent and articulate and most have already experienced more in their lives than most of us can expect to in a lifetime. It is those experiences that make their songwriting so compelling and their ability as accomplished musicians make the experience all the more enjoyable.

Later with Jools has presented and introduced some of the worlds finest female singers over the years, I remember an unforgettable performance from Beverley Knight in the early days of the show and the introduction of the then unknown Amy Winehouse performing a jazz song prior to her first album was spine tingling.

Jools has recently been airing favourite moments from the 250 shows that have been aired since the first in 1992 and despite being broadcast in the late night slot the show remains a must for music fans across the UK and possibly even further afield.

You can catch Rumer’s performance on Later with Jools Holland on Friday at 11.30pm on BBC Two, when she will perform two further songs including the next single Aretha.

Rumer’s debut album Seasons Of My Soul is released on November 1st and has topped the pre-order chart at Amazon this morning.

Queen guitarist Brian May has slammed ITV for pulling the plug during the band’s set at the Nelson Mandela bash at the weekend.

The 90th birthday party treat was shown live from London’s Hyde Park last Friday and closed with Queen performing a set of their hits. May was angered that the TV company decided to cut most of the bands performance, forcing him to post the following statement on his website:

“It baffles me how, given the privilege of televising an internationally significant event, a TV company can miss the point so badly.

“All [they] had to do was televise the whole event, with no insertions from them. Well, it seems they largely failed. I wonder who’s responsible for these bad decisions?”

If you feel that you might have missed something have a look at the following videos of Queen closing the show.
