Colin Pollock – Long Gone – Album review

John Williams - Monday 27.07.09, 14:45pm

colin_pollock_bw_npf4756London-based Scottish guitar maestro Colin Pollock’s first full studio album Long Gone, warms the heart and brings a glint to the eye with its subtle examination of often unpalatable truths.

Four years in the making the album features top flight musicians including Steve Honest on pedal steel and the inimitable Luke Juby who played keyboards on the album before going off on a massive world tour with pop sensation Mika.

Drum and percussion was provided by Max Zastiera and Vinzenz Benjamin appears on bass guitar. Backing vocals were largely provided by Kim Chandler but she was joined on the album’s ultimate track – The Road is Long, about the life and times of Dr. Martin Luther King – by divas Annabel Williams and Rietta Austin.

The opener – A Little Piece of You – a perhaps deceptively optimistic unfolding of a naive love affair, soon to be Long Gone, tempts you through the looking glass into his colourful world. And then he’s got you

Amidst a thorny tangle of world-weary wreckage lie a dozen lyrically diverse tales – of twisted love (The Gold Digger Gets It), broken souls lurking in the mire of reality TV celebrity (New Depths in Shallow) and the faded glory of end-of-pier performers (It’s a Drag), to mention but a few, set against a background of guitar perfection.

Pollock’s music has the laid back feel of Mark Knopfler or JJ Cale, two major influences on his work, the intricate but simplistic guitar sound is quite perfect against Pollocks warming stories and effortless vocals.
