Already getting plenty of radio airtime, Dakota are set to become one of the stand out indie pop bands in the charts this year.
We Get Along was most recently featured on the front page of My Space as one of the video’s of the week, stirring up interest in Dakota and also the album Heart & Soul.
Dakota – We Get Along
Dakota are creating quite a buzz wherever they go right now and Buzzin Pop Music caught up with the band for a brief interview;
How would you describe the band?
“We are a collective of individuals all trying to make some good and honest Indie Pop”
My first impression of Dakota was how much the vocals reminded me of Brett Anderson (Suede) There appears to be a resurgence of BritPop right now, do you feel that Dakota are part of that?
“Wow that would be great to be associated with anything like ‘Britpop’ as that was such a huge influence on the band. We’d be honoured to be a part of its resurgence”
Who or what influenced you to form a band, and what artists do you feel influence your songwriting?
“What influenced us to form a band was our individual motivation to make some good music. When we heard the songs that Ben already had in the bag we all knew that there was something special there. As for the people that influence the songwriting? It would be impossible to mention them all as everything influences Dakotas songwriting!”
How happy are you with the debut album?
“We are very happy with it. It really has been a labour of love!”
What are the bands favourite tracks from Heart & Soul?
“Ben: Taking Over, Aaron: Even If You Go Away, Tom: Heart & Soul, Rob: Why Don’t You Like Me”
Heart & Soul appears to be stacked full of potential singles, was that planned or just the way things worked out?
“It really is just one of those things as Ben is really a prolific songwriter”
Are you continuing to write new material?
“Absolutely. Ben is laying down some vocals at this very moment!”
What are your plans for 2010, any summer festivals or UK tour dates planned?
“Gig, gig and then gig some more! It’s all being planned at the moment. All the dates will be up on our MySpace when we have them confirmed.”
What music are you currently listening to and who are your personal heroes?
“At the moment the Two Door Cinema Club album is being listened to quite a bit as is Muse and Eric Clapton! Our musical heroes are the likes of ‘The Beatles, The Doors, and the Foo Fighters”
Has the album helped Ben get over his personal loss (girlfriend)?
“The process was very cathartic for him and yes he’s moved on rather nicely”
Do you prefer being in the studio or playing live?
“They are two very different scenarios so its impossible to choose. We love the studio because that’s where you can experiment and mess around with new ideas. But we love playing live because that’s where you get the audience feedback and interaction. No gig is ever the same and we thrive off of that!”
Has the album success changed your lives
“It’s early days yet so no, not really”
Where do you see the band in five years time?
“In five years time we hope to be out there in the world playing to a crowd of people that want to hear what we’ve got to say. That’s what we do and will always do.”
