Estelle currently number one in the charts with American Boy, has blasted the UK music press for over promoting white soul singers.
Duffy, who Estelle knocked off the top of the chart at the weekend and Adele came in for some criticism from London born Estelle. ‘I’m not mad at them, but I’m wondering how the hell it is there’s not a single black person in the press singing soul.’
Estelle told the Guardian ‘Adele ain’t soul. She sounds like she heard some Aretha records once and shes got a deeper voice - that don’t mean shes soul.’
Estelle says that she had to go to America to further her career after her UK record label had no idea how to build on the success of her 1980 single in 2004. Atlantic records signed her up, and here she is top of the charts.
