Every now and then someone comes along with a record that breaks the rules of definition and this track Pick Me Up from Jo Hamilton is one of those rare gems.
The song is taken from the new album Gown which also promises to be one of the best new albums of the year, having received critical acclaim at the recent London launch party.
Stemming from a nomadic family with roots in both Kenya and Jamaica, Jo Hamilton was brought up in a house two miles from the nearest neighbour in the wilds of northern Scotland. Her parents moved constantly in her youth, which saw her spending periods in Turkey, UAE, Kuwait, Sri Lanka and Cambodia.
She later studied classical viola in her teens and her music like her life appears to fuse several cultures and genres into one global ball of rich and exotic music.
SimmyRichman in The Independent on Sunday says of Jo Hamilton:
“In a world of La Roux, Little Boots and Lady Gaga, this is an unashamedly grown-up record that dares to step out of the boxes we have reserved for our female singer-songwriters.”
Visit Jo Hamilton here to listen to Pick Me Up and two other outstanding tracks each a world apart from the other.
