KT Tunstall writes letter to KFC

Terry Lane - Wednesday 11.06.08, 17:08pm

K T TunstallThe Scottish musician and three-time BRIT Award-winner KT Tunstall has sent a letter on behalf of peta2, the youth arm of People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals, to the managers of every KFC restaurant in Scotland asking for their help in pressuring the company to stop its suppliers’ worst abuses of chickens.

“I am asking for you to use your position as a KFC store manager to help eliminate the worst abuses of chickens, such as live scalding in defeathering tanks and drugging chickens to grow so quickly that they become crippled under their own weight…As a KFC manager, you can help make positive changes for chickens” writes Tunstall who made headlines when she refused to allow one of her songs to be used in an advert for a meat company.

The millions of chickens killed each year for KFC’s buckets are tortured in ways that would result in cruelty charges if other animals were the victims. They are drugged and bred to grow so large that many become crippled from the weight of their massive upper bodies. Their throats are cut while they are still conscious, and many are scalded to death in defeathering tanks. KFC ignored recommendations for animal welfare improvements made by members of its own advisory panel, including five who have since resigned in frustration.

KT Tunstall joins an ever-growing list of musicians including Joss Stone, Fall Out Boy, Pink, Kasabian and Jamelia who have teamed up with peta2 to inspire kids to challenge outdated, cruel attitudes about animals.

Here is a copy of the letter:

K T Tunstall has enjoyed commercial success since, selling over four million albums and receiving three BRIT Awards and two Grammy nominations.

She has released three studio albums: Eye to the Telescope (2004), KT Tunstall’s Acoustic Extravaganza (2006) and Drastic Fantastic (2007)

In 2005 a darker side to K T Tunstall was unleashed when someone compared her to Dido. Her response was rather shocking, as she said the singer/songwriter Dido “can’t fucking sing” after several fans compared the two musically.

K T Tunstall will be playing live throughout this summer including appearances at many UK music festivals, including Isle Of Wight Festival, Glastonbury, T In The Park and Cornbury Festival.
