The Shadow Puppets have emerged as the bookies favourites for the Mercury Prize for 2008. The band formed by Arctic Monkeys Alex Turner and The Rascals Miles Kane, is up for the best album award with their debut The Age Of The Understatement.
The album released in April this year went straight to number one in the UK. The retrospective album features material written by Miles & Kane with influences from Scott Walker and early David Bowie.
The Last Shadow Puppets are considered joint favourites with Radiohead, at odds of 5-1.
It will be a close race though with Elbow, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss and Burial currently showing odds of 6-1 with William Hill. Laura Marling, British Sea Power, Adele and Estelle share the odds of 8-1 and outsiders are considered to be Neon Neon, Rachael Unthank & The Winterset and Portico Quartet at 10-1.
The winner will be announced on September 9th.
