Funk turns punk on Tricky’s latest single, a remake of Kylie’s ‘Slow’, which is completely transformed into a heavy, distorted, dirty, electro-punk song, as foreign to his own legacy as to Kylie’s.
With half-growled, half-whispered vocals counterpointed as on previous records by the female voice, the cover shows Tricky breaking away from his chilled out hip-hop Massive Attack roots and indulging in a more sleazy direction of music.
This song is not for Kylie fans. Nor is it for Tricky traditionalists. If Tricky himself describes Kylie’s song as “sexy as fuck”, then this is “seedy as fuck”, but then perhaps that’s just the difference between Australia and Bristol.
This is a strange move for Tricky, but kind of works, and recalling in terms of dirtiness and complete overhaul Marilyn Manson’s version of ‘Tainted Love’, I can almost imagine this becoming the same kind of dirty hit as that.
Tricky’s album Knowle West Boy is released via Domino Records, his first for the label.
